A question to those who have the old Doom games on Steam

Which source port does the Steam versions use? I know you can get your own source port with the Iwads, but which is source port you get when installing and playing them through Steam?

I bought Star Wars: Dark forces a few years back and that uses DOSBox, which really isn't the best for those kinds of games.

Yeah, DOSBox. But that's not a source port it's just an environment for the game to run in. The good news is that Doom on Steam is the original Doom and not Doom 95 or any of the other updates released during that time. It comes with the original binaries, which allows you to source port to your heart's content.

FWIW, I used zDoom and had no problems playing through any of the Doom and Doom II content.

Yep, the Steam version is the original version running through Dosbox. No source port. The Steam version has all the WAD files so you can load those into any source port you like. I've tried zdoom, jdoom, chocolate, and vanilla, and they all work perfectly.

switching from dosbox to zdoom

I've been playing doom with dosbox, and have lots of saved positions; I assume if I switch to zdoom, that won't be an issue, correct?

I'm almost certain that your old saved games will not work if you try to play in a source port but I could be wrong.

They may not. Now that you mention it, I'm certain that saves don't work in between versions of zDoom. I forget their version numbering at the moment, but let's say you play and create a bunch of saves using zDoom 1.0. Then you update to zDoom 2.0. All your saves are belong to 1.0 and won't work with 2.0.

Why not WinDoom by the creator of the creator of Steam, Gabe Newell?

I thought Gabe worked on Doom95. WinDoom is a different product.

Also, both are considerably inferior to current source ports.
