New TF2 server and Quick Play

Hello,

Ok, this is about the 4th time I've posted about this (Wrong threads the other times) and I hope to get some answers. Recently some other like minded folks and myself have started a new TF2 server with a small community. We're looking to fill the server while keeping things legit. An Admin from another server has recommended we use a Automatic slot changer script, which will scale the slot to say we have 18 people, scale it by 4 so it'll show 18/22. We were just wondering if something like this running, if it was allowed and if so, would it take us off the Quick Play list. Thanks in advance.

Server side mods generally don't disqualify a server for quickplay.

I think that is too general of a statement to make.

To OP: the behavior of the plugin you have described would not disqualify you from quickplay but may not be the best method of starting a server.

Most admins will agree that the key is to get a group of players (friends or whatever) to join all at once, and on a regular basis. Like say you and 5 friends join at 4 pm everyday and play for awhile. This will jump start the server and get traffic going.

Although there is no hard data, most admin have noticed that they will start to get traffic from quickplay with at least 6 players in the server.

Thanks for responding. We have noticed that when we get 6 people on,the magic of Quick Play seems to kick in. But there has been more than once that we've have about 8 people on and no one from quick play has joined. We've double checked that all the settings are correct, so I guess its just a matter of it being hit or miss some nights.

As long you don't spoof the player count it should be fine.

As you mentioned in your post, you already have a core group of friends who's willing to help out. You're already one step toward the right direction.

The key is to keep it consistent. I know it's hard and laborious at first. But you and your friends need to find time to attempt to seed the server everyday.

As there are already a lot of TF2 servers out there, if you don't keep the activity level consistent, it's going to be hard for you to develop regulars on your server, your potential "player base" will ended up playing on other people servers.

Yes, quickplay helps, but it's definitely not the answer for the long term.

If you notice that Quick Play is not working, you can issue a "status" command to see if you are logged in with your Steam account. The output would look similar to this:

-> status
hostname: redacted
version : 1.2.0.8/21 4919 secure
udp/ip : redacted
account : logged in
map : redacted
players : 24 (32 max)

If you are not logged in, sometimes the only way to restart Quick Play, is to restart the server itself.

That actually might not be a bad idea. Thanks for the suggestion.
