This fix is for people who can't afford using HDR for any reason. Years ago I had bought ATI Radeon 9500 AGP 128Mb videocard and got free HL2 license as a bonus. About a year later HL2 had been finally released and I've been able to play it reasonably well with that old-n-slow Radeon 9500 after messing up with the settings a bit.
Later on I had switched to using linux as a main OS for the home PC and thus had been forced to use Wine in order to play HL2. With recent enough version of Wine playing HL2 wasn't a big deal: using dxlevel 80/81 and making some tuning to the cvars I've been able to get 60+ FPS on GeForce 6600 PCX 256Mb videocard. Things were working good... right up to the moment some person at Valve decided to update old-good HL2 with a fresh version of the source engine. Not only the support for the dxlevel 7 had been broken (so one wishing to play HL2 on his old PC now have to go into bloody mess with using HL2:Lost Coast as the engine that's still able to run well at dxlevel 7 and feed it with the contents of the HL2 gcfs), but also HDR had become requirement as some levels were updated to support HDR and ordinary "SDR" lightmaps were not shipped along with this updated levels. To make it clear: I had no longer been able to play the game with the hardware this game was initially working well on. Put it in the other way: without prior notice Valve had prohibited me to play the game I own on my old hardware and obliged me to buy a new GPU in order to get my toy back. One may say that I could simply turn the HDR on and be happy in case I've got a videocard that had been manufactured in 2008 or later, but that's not a right way to go. First of all, HL2:EP1 and EP2 supported HDR since their release. And anyone out there was offered a choice at the preferences menu to either enable or disable the HDR renderer. EP1 and EP2 worked perfectly in either modes, with or without HDR. Compare this to the HL2: originally there were no HDR available at all and the game was working perfectly; now I have got the same a choice in menus as in EP1/2 to either enable or disable HDR, but in case I don't want to use it for some reasons I would end up with the incorrectly rendered picture at a number of levels. So this engine update actually introduced the huge regression to the game that affects a number of Valve's customers with not-so-fresh hardware. Thanks to the ljbade, with this simple fix I can get my HL2 perfect gaming experience back. I can hardly believe that people at Valve are unaware of this bug - take a look into HL2 bug report thread, this issue had been reported there numerous count of times. And I can't understand why wasn't this bug fixed officially as the fix itself is the easiest thing ever: just re-run Source engine lit tool (vrad) over the affected maps with parameters set in a way that both types of lighmaps are generated and release an updated hl2 gcf with this maps included. Download size wouldn't be huge: about 200Mb or even less. The lack of the official bug fix makes me think that this way Valve tries to "help" their partners at AMD and nVIDIA by forcing customers with the older GPUs to do an upgrade. Okay. Since the first one doesn't work what do I do after I download the second one?
PM me or reply to me please? EDIT: Nvm! Thank you ljbade! EDIT2: Would this work on Synergy?? The co-op hl2 mod? Last edited by Jay Are: 02-01-2011 at 08:50 PM. |

Unfortunately, there is no alternative link. You should probably PM ljbade and see if he can set you up with the lighting fix.

Sorry that the old RapidShare link stopped working.
Here are the two new links: https://rapidshare.com/files/398429499/ldr_fix.exe - fixes lighting when HDR is off https://rapidshare.com/files/399141705/sky_fix.exe - fixes non-HDR skyboxes |

Could someone post new ones or reply if they have sky_fix.exe and ldr_fix.exe? This is the ONLY fix I've gotten to work on my system. |
