Friend is offline on my list but online on his Steam Community page.

Recently for some reason i've experienced a really annoying and frustrating bug.

My friend whom i talk to every day seems to be bugged, or is it me?

I logged on today and i wanted to talk to him, it said he was last online 9 hours ago so i assumed he was sleeping.

I was on this forum and i saw him posting which would mean he is online on Steam because he's always online on Steam when he's on the computer.

I looked at my friend list, says he's still offline. When i go to his Steam Community page it says he's Online, i cannot post comments anywhere though.

I told my other friend to add him but he keeps getting "Error, unable to add friend try again" or something like that.

On his list, it says i am still his friend and it does the same on my list.

It wouldn't make sense that im blocked either, we're childhood friends for gods sake.

This is starting to jarate me off because i seriously need to talk to him, there are matters we must discuss and im already late.

I don't know if that works for profile page. Never bothered to notice it.

Also online on forums doesn't necessarily mean online on steam.

He/she could have signed out of 'Friends' which is something I have done before in the past to aviod having to chat. But he/she can still be logged into Steam and therefor showing as 'Online' on his/her profile.

I've been experiencing this bug too recently - I didn't really notice until my 'offline' friend starting speaking to me lol. But then I couldn't reply of course, because they were 'offline'...

Happened twice this week, but signing in and out (yourself and/or your friend) seems to fix it, eventually.

I have been getting this same issue recently for 1-2 friends. Always the same friend(s). Steam seems to auto-block them or something. The fix is simple, I go to the friends tab, 'Select All' and then 'Unblock Selected', and a second later my friends are back online. This happens very often. They have not blocked me, and I have never blocked anyone.

Also, if I check the 'Blocked Users' tab it says 'You have not blocked anyone'. Which is true, bit still unblocking fixes the problem. This must be a bug in steam itself. Annoying. Anyone know more permanent solutions?

Edit: it did it again, when I restarted steam.

I've been getting this. I find if I then block the "offline" user and unblock them, they appear online again.

I've been having the same problems too. I figured out the same block workaround myself, but it's still annoying having to do it all the time just to be able to message a friend.

He said he's running peerblock, could that be causing the problem?

I've seen this typically happen when someone isn't signed into friends. Being signed into the forums or even just steam (but not friends), I believe, will still show the user as online in their profile, even if they're unaware of it.

Same problem. I have hamachi and it shows him online, my friends steam profile says hes online, yet in my friends list it shows him offline.

I actually just started getting this today too. I can also confirm the block/unblock fix. Actually you don't even have to block them, just select them on the friends page and select unblock, and they'll pop back online.
