When do the Crystals appear?

Hi, I have bred a level 5 horse. Should one of the crystals appear or do they only appear when I have bred all the different level 5 horses? Thanks in advance :-)

I'm still trying to figure out how to breed a level 3 horse, since i can only buy a lvl 1 one.

They appear when you have a unique level 5 horse in quests.

There are five races, and each race can only get one crystal. So if you got the Ice Steed crystal already, it is of no use to have another Ice Steed. That is what is meant by "unique".
