Yeah, this. I'm tired of "Hard" modes being turned down to baby players. I miss the old "Nightmare" modes in Doom and Quake, for example.

Also, HL2 is fairly easy on the whole, even on Normal/Hard. I've played through enough times with no sound on a touchpad. Part of the ease is experience, but part of it is it's just not THAT hard.

I think one of the reasons HL1 is harder than HL2 is that a hit from a head-crab takes away 10hp as opposed to HL2's 1/2hp

There are console commands you can use to increase the amount of damage you take. There's even a command to damage yourself it's "hurt_me" or something like that. Unless that's just some weird masochistic HL2 dream.
If it is for real and I'm not just imagining it you could bind it to a key in the console, maybe a key that's already in use...
bind "e" "hurt_me"

The easiest way to increase the difficulty is to tamper with skill.cfg. Open that file with notepad and increase enemy hp and damage taken, and decrease you weapon's damage. Make sure to find a balance in these values and not exaggerate.

Danny, did you play Episodes One and Two? 'Cause I think these games are harder than HL2. Ep. One is very hard in the elevator sequence. And the Hunters from Ep. Two are a real nightmare, at least for me.

Another thing that make Ep. One hard is trying to play all the game taking only one shot, to make the achievement.

If I have to do this to make a game harder, the game is too easy. We need to stop coddling gamers. I'll be curious to see how we get back to the old style difficulty and what developers try (ex: the attempt being made in Bioshock: Infinite)

Actually, I found both Episode One and Episode Two a lot easier when I went for the achievements (in my first playthrough) rather than in following playthroughs. Anyway, I agree with the Half-Life 2 games being easier, and not only because of the enemies being easier to kill, but also because there's a lot of medkits/batteries/ammo lying around.

I think that the achievements could be harder too. Yes, there are ones which are hard to do, but you can do them at any difficulty. If some of them were restricted to the hardest difficulties, it would be nicer to the gamers who seek challenge.

You can also decrease the amount of hp given by medkits/vials/batteries from skill.cfg Anything you wish to change, from enemy hp to any kind of damage, you will find in skill.cfg. I know it's pretty lame to modify a gamefile to increase the difficulty, but it works fine. You will die more often and you get a much more alert gameplay. You won't have time to linger around shooting enemies standing in one point, you will actually have to hide and dodge enemy fire if you want to survive. If things get harder, you'll also find out that it is more efficient to kill enemies using explosives and the game's physics, than shooting them. So you'll try to save the ammo and rely more often on the gravity-gun. You can also make playthroughs using only the crowbar or any other weapon if you want to challenge yourselves even more.

The only thing that happens when you change the difficulty in HL2 is the enemies have more health, but you are not more vulnerable

I did Ep 1 ages ago, but I'm going through it again on hard. And yes, the elevator sequence was absolutely brutal and I barely managed it. I just did it there.

The darkness has been a total nightmare and not a lot of fun tbh. And I just mean the fact I can't see anything, not the difficulty setting.

Maybe some gamers would like to..you know..enjoy the game, not kill ourselves doing it? Quit whining and start learning to mod!

Hey, it's not always the case. Crysis, for instance, isn't *that* easy. True, making sniper kills to the backs of Koreans' heads with single-bullet shots from SCAR with a silencer on in sneak mode gets really easy with some training and good map knowledge, but then try tearing through in a killing spree in Delta mode...

Sorry. OT.

Not gonna happen, making games today cost a lot of money meaning publishers are less likely to take risks (innvoation). That also means games will stay being easy and the FPS genre stagnating more. Think it will get better with next generation? Bah, the cost in making games will skyrocket meaning developers will be much more less likely to take risk (innovation). Games will most likely get easier and the FPS genre becoming so stagnant a game like DNF might be awesome.

The future of gaming is bleak, both for PC and consoles with greedy publishers trying to kill the used game market. Guess giving your pal a Xbox 360 game when your done with it is bad and evil.
