No steam voice chat sounds

Hey guys, I've posted about this before, a long time ago, but nothing came through, and I think this is the time I shall deal with it.
For some reason voice chat sounds from steam only come through my center speaker (I have 5.1 sound) and it's really quiet. This is a pain since I have to have my headset on to use my mic properly.
I've looked through my steam settings and sound settings on my computer, unplugged the center speaker (which made NO sound come out) and I'm stuck. MW3 does this too.
Can anyone help? Thanks!

I'm having a similar problem, and I don't know the solution.

In particular, I play dota2, and I don't hear any voice chat sound ever - including in-game commentary channels. (I know that other people can hear it, because they sometimes type text referring to something that was said over voice chat.)
