Coriolanus

7/10

At first it was a bit odd because of the dialogue but as the themes developed i found it quite engaging

I decided to look for this thread.

J Edgar 8/10

Leonardo DiCaprio will be known as one of the best actors of all time, and here's why, when I watch a movie with him in it, I don't think I'm watching a Leonardo DiCaprio movie. What makes a great actor, is that he/she isn't recognized. He accomplishes that with every role.

oh yeah, and he's dreamy. *little girl giggle*

Sorry, but I'm going to pull a Marty McFly from BttF 3 (notice the crafty movie tie-in to fit this thread), and refuse to fight you Mad Dog.

{Eyes open wide} - "Nobody calls me chicken". I'll just have to find a way of defeating you that is both ingenious and not-so violent, and ends in you getting covered in horse manure.
Works every time.

the girl with the dragon tattoo, 7.5/10.
Not a bad movie, but I the plot was a little bit ridiculous imo.

I pretty much feel the exact opposite. Leo doesn't come close to being a character actor, but that's just me. Not saying he hasn't pulled off great performances though.

When you look at his list of awards that he's won, the picture becomes a bit clearer (only won, not nominated).
  • The Departed (2006): Austin Film Critics Association, Central Ohio Film Critics Association, Irish Film and Television Awards, National Board of Review, Satellite Awards
  • Romeo + Juliet (1996): Berlin International Film Festival, Blockbuster Entertainment Awards
  • What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993): Chicago Film Critics Association Awards, National Board of Review
  • Marvin's Room (1996): Chlotrudis Awards
  • The Aviator (2004): Golden Globe, MTV Movie Awards
  • Revolutionary Road (2008): Palm Springs International Film Festival

Less impressive...
  • Shutter Island (2010): Teen Choice Awards
  • Catch Me If You Can (2002): Teen Choice Awards
  • The Man in the Iron Mask (1998): Razzie Awards
  • Titanic (1997): Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, MTV Movie Awards
  • Hollywood Film Festival - Actor of the Year (2004)
  • Kids' Choice Awards - Big Green Help Award (2009)
  • Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards - New Generation Award (1993)

I don't think awards is any way to judge a persons acting skills. I mean, Gary Oldman hasn't won anything substantial and he's an amazing actor.

I think both Leo and Gary, that's right we are on a first name basis, are both brilliant actors.

I would agree with you on certain award shows and in the case of character actors, but generally you can see a great performance being rewarded. Gary Oldman has been greatly depreciated throughout the years, namely because he's one of the best character actors the world has seen, in other words, often in supporting roles. Nothing wrong with that, it's just not the kind of career path that showers you with awards necessarily. And that's the sacrifice, cos nothing else matters but the character.

He's only been nominated once for an Oscar, which I think also comes down to the projects he's been involved in, that the Academy doesn't approve of or they look for a more complete package. Still, it blows one's mind. That said, he's won a Saturn Award for Dracula, an Empire Award and SFFCC Award for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Tom Hardy, a character actor himself, has said: "Gary Oldman is, hands down, the greatest actor that's ever lived." It takes one to know one, both have had a similar career and their talent has ultimately gotten them noticed, which is why they're involved in big productions these days. Oldman in something like the Batman films is a massive bore, cos he doesn't have much to work with.

DiCaprio doesn't come close to Oldman. That said, I look forward to watching DiCaprio play his first (solo) villain (where Oldman is most at home), cos the only time I remember him playing a bad guy was in his dual role in The Man in the Iron Mask. If you can't play a great villain, you're not a great actor.
