In the process of upgrading, what kind of performance can I expect?
Bought a new mobo yesterday, along with an i5 3570k and 8 gigs of Corsair Vengeance RAM.
I didn't have enough to get a new graphics card (yet) so I'm sticking with my current nVidia 550ti with a gig of video memory in it. On my old setup (same card, with an old AMD Phenom 2.5gig quad core and 4 gigs of DDR2 ram) The Witcher 2 didn't run so hot on anything higher than maybe medium/low settings. One of the largest problems was walking into a building and having to wait for all the textures for fade in in layers. So I'm hoping to get better performance now, but do to a missing psu cable I wont be able to get all this working until later. |

I wouldn't expect performance to improve all that much. The 550Ti is a pretty low end card for demanding games, so you'll really be bottle necked by it with those other components.
Check out these links though: http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/opti...GTX-550-Ti-OPS http://www.geforce.com/optimize/guid...tweak-guide/#1 It really depends on your resolution I guess (I'm just assuming 1920x1080). |

This game is more demanding on the GPU so i doubt you will see any big performance gains. Your Quad-Core Phenom processor was plenty enough for this game it was your GPU that is the bottleneck, change that and you should see a big performance boost.
If you plan to get a higher end video card then i recommend you look at the cards power requirements first, you might need a new PSU. Last edited by cyborg34573: 05-13-2012 at 11:24 AM. |

Finally got everything working and reinstalled (ended up having to buy a new optical drive and a new hard drive), and I'm getting a lot better performance so far. Almost finished the prolog tonight, with everything on high (not ultra), SSAO and Ubersampling are both off, but the resolution is 1920x1200 and everything else is on.
For some reason running it at anything less than 1920x1200 gives me black bars ... even though I've got 16:10 set as the aspect ratio. Oh well. Still want a new graphics card, and I've got my eye on the GTX 570 with 2 gigs of memory in it. I think that was about $320 on newegg. |
