Is it worth it for me to upgrade my Motherboard for DDR3 1333?

Hey,

The reason I'm asking is, cause if I alt tab out of lets say Tera or SWTOR my pc runs REALLY slow and if I open google chrome it appears as a black box before it loads, and afterwards runs very slow. Also when I exit out of a game like this my pc runs very slow until I restart.

As of right now this is my system:

CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz

GPU - EVGA 01G-P3-1373-AR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) Superclocked EE 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0

RAM - G.Skill DDR2 800 4GB

Mobo - GIGABYTE GA-MA785G-UD3H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

HDD - 650GB 7200rpm

I am wondering if it is worth it to upgrade my mobo and ram to this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813135250

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231428

It would be a 74$ upgrade after rebates..

Would I see a big performance increase in games like Tera etc? People have said my RAM might be bottlenecking my CPU or GPU.

I wouldnt upgrade the CPU or GPU yet, im going to ride them out till they are completely useless, so at least another year or 3 before I upgrade and build a whole new PC.

So is it worth it to do this quick 74$ upgrade? or should I just wait 1-3 years when I build a new pc?

Thanks.

You need more ram, not faster ram, 4gb is bare minimum for the latest games now a days. DDR2 to DDR3 is not very noticeable and it's definitely not worth it.
You'll see a larger increase in performance going from 4gb to 8gb then ddr2 to ddr3, trust me on this in that I've gone from ddr2 to ddr3, made barely any difference, added 4gb and huge performance increase.

this is good advice.

also your motherboard choice is a huge step down from what you already have, i'd start off with 4 more gigs of ram on your current setup for sure.

No. My DDR2 1066 memory scores 7.9 in the Windows Experience Index. It is most likely the fastest part of your system and will be bottlenecked by anything else in your system. DDR2 also has lower latencies than DDR3 and tighter memory timings.

You also have to realize that ddr3 has faster frequencies so it compensates for it's looser timings

It is like a faster car, but has to wait at stop lights for a longer period of time.

The motherboard you selected is horrible and would die in 6 months, so no, you would have to spend at the least $100 to get a motherboard that will last you a few years and some good ram. If your really tight on cash you could do is get slower ram and match your current ram speed in the bios with your slower one or you could get this one that i just found http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098 (i'm not sure what's the difference between your current one and this one) or you could mix brands. If I were you and didn't want to pay the $57 I would get the other gskill ram I suggested.

Yes, that is true, but when looking at real world performance the difference is negligible.

I think a 120gb SSD would be the better answer, this whole 4gb isnt enough for games is complete nonsense, atleast untill games actually are 64bit and can use more then 3.5 gb of memory, as it stands now 64bit games are still not coming that much.

Get a ssd, install os and favorite games on it and you will be amazed.

No, not at all, for a period of time, one of my ram sticks failed and I had ssd. The difference was huge, every modern game I played lagged, the boot times were fine, slightly slower but still fast, but the actual in game performance was impacted a lot by the loss of 4gb of ram. Tom's hardware wrote an article about how little ssds impacted actual FPS, i'm looking for it right now i'll update this once I find it.

Its not so much that the games use all 4 gig, its that windows uses 2 of that 4gig automatically. So if you loose 2 gig to windws and the game takes up a gig, that leaves the background programs a gig to mess with - which will leave the user with no resources and an absolutely huge swap file (along with the hd going nuts).

An ssd drive won't do anything other than load the map a second or 2 faster. This guy's best bet is to add another 2 to 4gigs of ram. The type of ram doesn't really matter in this case.
