They didn't fit perfectly. The first button I press triggers a panel coming out of my side of the bridge that compresses the space available. The cubes are held together by the resulting pressure and horizontal friction, not some glitch. Kudos to Valve for making a physics engine that can reproduce such novel experiments accurately.
