Does Yari Wall do anything other than stop cav?

Does it give them more attack, defense, or stop an enemy charge?

Alright, I did some testing, and it definitely does something.

I had a vet ashigaru (9 attack, 8 defense) use yari wall, and 2 squads of katana samurai attacked them. They won, with 100 losses and 200 kills. (Units set to ultra)This was not an ai, but a human player.

The Yari wall is super effective against cav charges. Calvery cannot charge through a yari wall without taking heavy casualties.

It is also slightly effective against enemy foot solider charges. It is best used against cav or if you are on a hill, a yari wall pointed downhill is super-ultra effective against all types of charges.

It's a huge defensive formation. Think of it as a formation the 300 Spartans would use (if that helps). It's super effective against cav but also effective against even samurai (they just won't last as long)

I use it to stop enemy units and have my katana or other non meat shield units to try flanking the held up enemy units.

There are no real stat changes, the unit's men just huddles closer so penetration by a charge is minimized. They are great for holding position, especially against cavalry; other units would still have trouble getting through.

2 units of katana samurai against one yari ashigaru you'll expect defeat, regardless of pretty much anything else. I'm amusing you meant they lost only 100 and killed 200 of your men?

No, I meant my vet ashigaru held off 2 stock katana samurai and got 200 kills. I should note that they had a morale buff from my leader general, but other than that, yeah, it was amazing. It's been so effective that when I do sieges now, I just bring 100% ashigaru, with 14% cost deduction on them. If they bring a crapload of archers, i just send a couple outside to chase them away. I'm pretty sure it's a glitch, but when they shatter while in yari wall, they will stay in place and keep fighting, but won't pursue the enemy.

Spear wall removes the full charge bonus of the attacking unit, and might even turn it against it, which is why they do so much damage.
But yeah AFAIK there is no actual stat change.

Wow, that is ridiculous! Where did you find that out?

Pretty much experimental (although I do seem to remember having read it somewhere). A large amount of damage to the attackers seems to be dealt at time of impact, just like it would the other way if the charge hit home. That might not be an actual bonus though, but rather a side effect of the tighter formation affecting the combat calculation.
I did look through the db tables but didn't find any concrete values for the spear wall ability; I suppose it's in the code.
