Does Steam notify you when there's an update?

Let say, I'm playing non-steam game(what I mean here is online games like swtor, WoW, etc....), and Steam doesn't really care about it at all, and gonna download a huge update for you.

After you finished/quit the game you notice Steam has made a huge update for one or two of your game from the library, and now you realised why all the spikes and delay came from...

What I'm asking: Is there a feature that Steam will let you know there's an update for this game right now, and should you choose to do it now or pospone it until you are not playing online games or reserving the internet speed for any other purpose.

You can right click on a game, click Properties and then Updates. There you can disable automatic updates.

Also I'm not sure about it but if you add your non-steam game on steam library, it shouldn't update when you play it.

Thanks for you 1st suggestion, I've tried before this IT DOESN'T WORK, Example: dont know if you own a steam version Witcher 2 last year, they have a very infamous update bug which force you to download a 7 GB update, (what they do is they delete your 7 GB of content and re-download again) I already turn it off af the the 1st lesson, but it still happen on the second patch. And a recent example, Dota 2 - it's like 240MB everytime they add a new hero...... turned it off, but it'll just update automatically.

However, your second suggestion, I'm not sure either, awaits someone to confirm this.

Hm, yes I have Witcher 2 and it had some terrible bugs as far as updating goes, but on other games it should work. If it doesn't then there are not much you can do unfortunately.

If you pause the update once it'll never restart for another update.
