Anno 2070 --> good startup, then black screen. PLEASE HELP!

my problem is that I got past the install and launch (i get though the ubisoft and steam launchers ok) but when the game starts up i get a message in the bottom right "loading shaders" and then the screen remains black. then a line of text stays in the bottom right "[game modding detected] v1.05.7331" which I assume isnt a bad thing? then if I try and alt-f4 or ctrl-esc to check my desktop a game window comes up "are you sure you want to quit?". Clearly the game wants to run but no part of the actual game comes up on display. Also, while on this black screen I can press Shift-Tab and bring up my steam menu with no problems, steam even pops up a message on startup 'here is your game key, enter it when the game asks for it.' I already entered the key at the end of my installation, I don't know if I need to enter it again somewhere and that's why it won't let me play or what, but for now I'm screwed. Should I just reinstall??

I had a lot of trouble launching skyrim too when I was playing that and I couldn't get it to display properly until I changed my display settings. Would something like that help me here? How would I do that?
