rearmed: unable to grab upper barrel in first boss room

I've encountered a glitch in the first boss room of bionic commando rearmed in which grabbing the barrels required to throw at the boss is quite a challenge.
when attempting to grab the barrels in the usual method (face towards barrel within the arms reach of the object, press down and release the arm horizontally then once the the arm has gripped the object press the arm again the retreive the barrel)
the arm instead attaches to the flooring the barrel is standing on and pulls me towards it.
this is ok with the lower barrel as you can stand on the floor just next to the barrel and use diagonal arm movements to grab it but this is impossible with the upper barrels as there is no platform directly in front of the barrels.
from watching playthroughs on youtube it appears that most people do not have this problem and can grab the barrels in the normal manner.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you crouching when trying to grab the barrel? If so, try standing up, moving to the left, and then pressing your arm button. Sending the arm out while crouching fires it horizontally, but lower than it will be if you fire it while holding a left or right direction button when standing up.

What do you mean, there's no platform directly in front of the barrels? There's the floor that door you enter the room is on, a walkway above it, and and a smaller platform above the walkway. During the dialogue before the fight, the upper platform is behind Rad's text box.
