Black flashing on ND: Haunting of Castle Malloy

[Sorry for this repost, but the ND forum is virtually dead. No one ever looks in there]

I've just purchased The Haunting of Castle Malloy and booted it up. The game works but right after the Her Interactive logo appears the screen turns black. I get to Nancy's desk (which serves as the main menu) and the screen flashes black quite quickly. It is entirely unplayable due to this.

Are there any solutions to this? No one else seems to have this problem, I've checked online.

System specs? Do you have an AMD/ATI videocard and use the 12.4 driver? If yes, get rid of that and use an older one. They totally borked that one driver.

Intel Core Quad 2 Quad CPU
3336 MB RAM
Directx 9.0c
Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT

I'm fairly sure I meet the requirements for the game since it's quite old. And ND games aren't known for being resource heavy.
