It *IS* free to play. Always has been. It was the first free to play game on Steam.

He is talking about the "Free to Play" genre section in the Steam Store.
AS is not in it, he has a point.

I agree with mavrik16, Alien Swarm should be listed in the F2P-list. That would increase the amount of players a bit.

But it isn't Free to Play. It's free.

Actually, if you make it "free to play" people will think that you have to pay money to get the good stuff, or to advance at a decent rate. (That's what you have to do on "free to play".)

That's what's so weird about this. Alien Swarm is 100% totally free - not even free-to-play. And yet the community is small.

Adding a few more achievement related TF2 items to it might help keep people playing. Maybe a few achievements you can only get after you've promoted yourself a few times.

Maybe like promoting yourself to level 20 could give you golden parasite to TF2. Currently there is only that green one and actually level 15 could give you silver, level 10 bronze and so on. Make it limited time, during weekend (3 days to level up) and then the possibility is gone. It would also help TF2 economy. Actually i would prefer not to give even chance to play the golden one in 3 days.

So when people played 2 maps only to get the parasite back in the days, now the people who actually have played this game, like me, would then be rewarded for doing so instead of those level 1-2 people who just went in for the hat earlier.

That would work. I have to admit, I only started playing AS to get the hat. Have now quit playing TF2, but I still play AS. Just something about it.

Just that i seriously doubt Valve will ever put any effort into this game as it's free and provides no money to them. It had good base but one campaign just doesn't carry long enough :/

Not weird at all, the thing isn't just about being free, it's about content and those games are constantly getting more, while Alien Swarm has been pretty much left alone right after it's release, can't expect people to just keep doing the same content again and again.

And mods can only go so far.

This game was a simple experiment by Valve; Can a game stand on User Created Content alone? The answer was no, but I think that's because Valve shot themselves in the foot by not releasing the SDK right off the bat.
