Solution to Direct X not initializing
Edit the config.ini in the pirates file so it matches your desktop resolution.
The config file is located in C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Games\SIDMEI~1. There is also a shortcut to it in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's pirates!. don't reinstall windows like all the other sites tell you |

Thank you, this was the fix for my problem with Direct X. Though I had to change the resolution in the game afterward, because I got some kind of overscan. But it works fine now.
Running Win 7 64-bit, not using compat mode. |

Thank you for that one, this one should be stickied as well, as it seems this is the second most occurring problem with pirates.

Did that. Still gives me the same message after a black screen and "wheel" cursor.
Even tried the stickied suggestion for the .dll files. Still nothing. I tried installing it from the disc (purchased the steam version since it was 2.50 and i don't have to worry about my discs getting scratched anymore) and still got the same thing, both before and after modifying based on the suggestions above. Running on Win7 x64 Pro, 1920x1040 resolution just curious but you stick the config file in the steam directory for the game, correct? I actually didn't have a config file in either the steam version or the disc version after i installed. I had a config file for it from the "My Games" folder of it that was brought over from when i had XP on this machine Last edited by somedude210: 01-01-2011 at 09:13 PM. |

FYI, my folder didn't have that config file (seems to be generated after a successful load for some), so I had to create it myself. If you do not have a config.ini, create one and use the following syntax to declare your resolution:
[User Settings] WindowWidth = x WindowHeight = y e.g, my entire config file to launch was: [User Settings] WindowWidth = 3246 WindowHeight = 1920 |

This worked perfectly! Thank you so much!
Edit: For some reason, it's no longer working the day after. Weird
