Who makes Steam Achievements?
I'm curious about this, how the process works, the reasoning, does it cost extra for the developers, etc.
Is it the game developers or Valve who decides "let's put Steam achievements in this particular game!" |

If the game was also on console most time achievements are just ported over.
I remember talking to a Supreme Commander 2 dev who said they didn't even have an achievement system. It was just basic stat tracking and busy work used for achievements. Other time if it's planned for PC only these things are added as needed. It differs based on circumstances. |

Like all Steamworks features, there are no extra charges.
As I understand it, there's a page on the Steamworks partner website where developers can set up the achievements, including the name, image, description, etc. then they add code to the game which calls the Steam API to unlock the achievement. |

It all depends on if developers care about making them.

It's from the developers, of course.
The reasoning, because some people do love achievements and hunts for them, and increasing game replayability (like some people replaying some levels in Half-Life 2 to get secret achievement). It's also considered one of selling point...at least for me. |

Developers. Valve probably gives developers a nudge sometimes (particularly with any of the developer/Valve crossover ones like Defense Grid: You Monster).

I wish they had some kind of Steam reward system depending on how many achievements/points you've unlocked.

Developers make the achievements and code the Steamworks API to recognize, track, and give the notification for the achievements. The only hand Valve has in it at all is providing the Steamworks infrastructure to do so or putting he word out that they want to do an event using achievements. Even then it is still up to the developers if they want to join in, to make the achievement, and make the achievement work.

I think achievements add value to games, unlocking a really hard one or reaching the 100% in a game I particulary love It´s so satisfying.

Moreachievements
It would be really nice if there would be a lot more achievements in every game!

I like it the way it is, people actually treat them like what they should be. They're little bonus incentives to do different things in the game. |
