Dungeon Siege III local co-op

Hi I'm wondering how to start local co-op game in Dungeon Siege 3? I want to be able to play P1 as keyboard mouse, and P2 as controller. There doesn't seem to be an option to start the game as this, or to drop in as a 2nd player.

I think it used to work (keyboard + controller) but I couldn't get it to work. A post on the official forums suggests that this was nerfed in a patch and that you now need two controllers to play co-op. I can confirm that two controllers works great for PC local co-op.

This is the reply I got from Square Enix support:
