With it being the night before a national holiday I sincerely doubt anyone is manning the steam offices.

I did put in a ticket with the steam help desk mentioning the issue along with a link to this thread, so someone in support will get it whenever the steam tech gurus get back from vacation.

I wish they had some kind of status to say "offline authentication not working on our end" so at least I wouldn't waste lots of time trying to fix it on my end.

Argh. I'm on nights this week and spent most of last night trying all the arcane tricks I know to get the damn thing working offline. At least I know it's not just me and that, presumably, somebody is working on the problem.

One of those rare bits of dev feedback would be nice at this point.

Same here. I've made sure I unchecked automatically sign in to friends and have also made sure the ethernet cable is not connected (the two main "fixes" I see recommended) and the problem persists.

It's likely a corrupted or missing validation file server side that prevents it from correctly saving/reading the info.

Unplugging ethernet is not a fix. It's just the easiest lowest common denominator way of getting someone to disconnect from internet for the purpose of verifying that they got offline mode working.

It's not part of the process; it's a way to verify offline is working. It's just nessesary to include it in the list of steps because people can be really dumb, as evidenced by the fact that apparently now some people think it's a "fix".

Fantastic. I rely on offline mode on my laptop to keep me entertained during the three hours of travel I do for work each day.

Two days now without being able to access content I ostensibly "own", which would be less frustrating if Valve actually showed they were reacting to problems.

Same problem here. Have always been able to game offline (never used the Play Offline option in the menu though, always just started Steam without internet connection and it came with a pop-up Do you want to play offline). But now all of a sudden no joy. Tried all the hints an dtips, but still nothing.

Payed quite some money to Steam to play the games, but find it totally unacceptsble that they have no decent method to facilitate offline gaming.

I have made up my mind: screw Steam, I will go with Gamersgate from now on.

Hopefully this'll get fixed soon, it certainly looks like it's a widespread issue that just started happening
