How do you tell if an item is duped?

Topic
Assuming we aren't making massive generalizations like 'all level 1 maxes are duped'

Easy, you take a look at the item history on TF2 Items, and check to see that it's not in someone elses backpack.

This is an example of a duped unusual, and it's easy to tell because the item ID'd dont match up, and you can clearly see that two versions of the same hat exist in separate backpacks.

Outpost also has their own item history thing, just make sure the number highlighted is the last person to own the hat, meaning its the current ID.

Does that same method apply to heavily traded items like buds
Cause I can see the possibility of tf2items just being slow to update

edit: or even that most items considered 'duped' are just restored via steam support
