Erase un-necessary things from the autostart.

Make settings in your grafic card setting-program.

Use a free registry cleaner.

Get game(s) instead of a booster program.

Play

Besides that most of those programs are just snakeoil causing a placebo effect, they are pretty much harmless. Most of these only disable services and processes while a game runs and restore them afterwards. A well maintained system does not need that.

Pretty much this, but I would also note that many of these programs are (or otherwise contain) malware.

Indeed, at much they do the very same that could be made by hand and free (Some of those programs prices ashame me)
But to each it's own. If OP feels like using them, he can be sure they won't give him a Ban.

To reiterate the above unless you're on XP SP1 on a dialup connection, 'optimizing' software is pretty much useless. You'd be better off spending that money on things that will actually improve performance

1) SSD Windows drive - by far the 'oh my god why didn't I do this sooner' upgrade. SSD drives are now on fire sale with 60/80GB drives going for dirt cheap.
2) More RAM
3) Faster CPU
4) Faster GPU

Id love an SSD for my games, sadly more than 1TB of games would not come cheap for an SSD, maybe if I get the time I might set up a RAID config.
