Game Crash

I was working on a custom map and I hit rebuild. Then the game exited. When I tried to restart the game, it said "the game is unavailable ( invalid application configuration )"

What is this?

Try re-validating the game files (go into the steam library and right click on the game to get the option) that usually fixes any errors.

Red face

I just logged into the forums intending to post the same thing.

On Saturday I ran into this problem, my first time trying to play since reformatting my computer and re-installing the game.

I was seeing the crash a lot. So I did the revalidate and it found a file that was not right, redownloaded it, reinstalled and everything was hunky dory.

For about an hour.

Sometimes I get the steam error and sometimes not. Sometimes it just crashes to the desktop, sometimes I get windows errors.

It happens when I'm in the editor sometimes but more frequently it happens when I'm transitioning, either from the editor to in-game testing or vice-versa.

This is odd. Why is everybody getting crashes? And what could happen to mess up everyone's game files? It's not like they can spontaneously change...

RIGHT?

Well I don't think they're spontaneously changing, but it doesn't mean there's not something in the app that's causing them to change.

My update: I just validated again and again had a file not right. It downloaded and fixed itself and, before running the app, I validated a third time. This time all files checked, so I'll run the app again later this evening and see if I can recreate the problem.

Okay, here's my update.

I ran it again and it had to "reinstall" the components. That happend quickly and the game loaded. I got to the main menu, immediately hit Quit and reran the validation.

Again, 1 file was off and had to be redownloaded / reinstalled.

Next I'll try uninstalling and redownloading the whole game I guess...

Re-downloaded and re-installed the game. Loaded it up, launched into the menu, immediately quit and validated the components. Like before, 1 file identified, re-downloaded and re-installed. I launched the game again.

This time it went fine. I spent about 20 minutes popping between the editor and the game test, making changes in-between each.

Finally I quit and, without validating files, relaunched again (after waiting for it to Steam sync). Another 5-10 minutes, no crash. So I figured "maybe I'm fixed" and started to browse the Community maps when suddenly I crashed to the desktop.

One last validation:

1 files failed to validate and will be reacquired.

Here Portal 2 often crashes when I click the rebuild button. I always validate the files and I get like 20~30 files to be reacquired.
Hammer is also crashing a lot when I open/save a map and the explorer window opens.
