Glad to be the worst advice you ever heard

Anyway, imho most of mac/steam players use the bootcamp solution (at least the ones i've met) until that steam and its games become stable.

Wineskin is a far better alternative to Boot Camp. It runs Windows games in a compatibility layer, so there's no need for a Windows 7 disk or rebooting. Plus, it's freeware. I run both Dead Space games and Deus Ex on it frequently.

Plus I'm pretty sure most Mac users don't use Boot Camp to begin with, I'm not sure where you got that.

I get the same error message - I have now sent in tons of tickets with no answer - Steam obviously has no idea how to fix this & will not give a refund - Worst customer service I have ever experienced in any company!

I think steam is 2 teenage boys in someones basement!

Do NOT BUY GAMES FROM THEM!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone knows Wine. It's just a fork version and it's not a freeware but a free (as freedom) open-source software.

Run your games with Wine is the better way to experience lot of problems. Each game is different and needs specific parts of drivers and/or third party software. Even with an original Windows install, it's not rare to get some issues so with a sublayer software.. good luck.

Or you can use Wineskin, or an already custom made wrapper.

I run every Windows game currently in my Steam library off of a Steam Wineskin wrapper and I never have problems.

I've been having the same problem too. I've already tried every solution listed on this forum (including the one listed by steam) and nothing has worked. It just refuses to download.

Same here, when I lunch Steam for Mac, it will begin downloading updates, but I will stop unfinished at some point usually 12k, or sometimes 15k, and then it will give an error message: "Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again." My Internet is fine, I'm pretty sure there is no problem with my connection. Take a Look at this Screen Shot.

Angry

I emailed support about 3 weeks ago on this.

"Needs internet connection to download update"

No Reply.

----

Tried to attempt to do the .VDF edit, but no "offline" line in the code.

-----

deleted everything. tried a reinstall. update still stops midway saying "needs to be online" or whatever the exact message is.

-------

on Mac OSX 10.7.4

-------

still no workaround for me.

Downloaded this new version and I'm now receiving the "Steam needs to be online to update" message. Didn't see this before. Previous version worked fine.

Had to do the registry.vdf edit from the first page of this thread to get it working again.

One more condition found where we would not correctly handle mid-stream multi-request disconnects. We have this fix up now.

Tried everything.....

@JoeR i used the alternate .dmg download and it worked fine up to 12k or 15k kb, at which point it tells me i need to check mu internet connection. I am connected via my airport and have full connection. I have tried deleting the registry file etc. and it still isnt working, is there anything i can do or just wait for a fix to be released?

Ok, I have tried all the things in this forum including the pre-made Steam, but steam just refuses to work! I tried the new version for no avail. It gives me the following error: "Unable to login. offline mode is unavailable because there is no login information stored in this computer." My log in information has to be stored in the computer, in order to run steam, but because it's just been installed, it doesn't have any log in info, and since steam can't run without log in info, I can't input my log in info into steam. I know it's silly.
Is there a way I can manually put my log in info in some sort of file or something?
