rebinding keys

It still baffles me that games do not allow for customizing controls, especially for a pc game. You can edit the keys in a config file but it's still annoying how I have to exit and start up the game over and over till I find a feel good setup. The default bound keys are terrible so what I wanted to do is bind control to jump and bind alt to special. I got control for jump to work but I cant seem to bind the alt key at all, I've tried "alt" "alternate" and "alternative" but I am not really sure what else to call that key? Anyone else got ideas?
