How do you get more NPCs?

So I've been playing for awhile, and I can't figure out how to get more NPCs. I assume you can use the scroll to create missions for them, but I need an NPC to use that scroll. And I don't have him. Is there someway I'm missing to get NPCs?

You can find secret "Rescue NPC" missions throughout the game. They are typically found in caves and in large buildings.

Well, the ones with professions that you need to get your early buildings up should only seed until you have those professions. So, it's not like you'll have to run around and pass up dozens of these missions because they don't have what you need.

Oh, so you can't get missions to rescue survivors on the surface? That would explain it. I'm getting fed up with this game, I've played for several hours and haven't gotten a single rescue mission.

Correct, they are not on the surface. They are in caves and large buildings.

You can also get Guardian scrolls that make a rescue mission pop up can't you? Granted it tends to take awhile for you to get them, but if you cast it in the right place you can get up to 4 rescue missions to pop up at once.

Yes, you can, but their use requires that you have NPCs of a specific profession (I don't remember which right now). So, they can't necessarily be used right off the bat.

You can buy the Seek Survivor Scrolls. They can be used at any time once you have them. Use them in whatever map grid you want. The type of survivor you get is determined by the type of map grid it is used on. If you use the scroll while you are standing on a Grassland for instance, the NPC will be an Industrial Age npc.
