Logitech G27 Clutch Pedal

The clutch pedal on my G27 seems useless. With the controls set to manual and automatic clutch set to no, I can still shift using just the stick. I know this could be fast shifting but there it's just as quick as shifting with the clutch. Is the clutch just not necessary in this game?
