I have a creative audigy sound card and what worked for me was changing my default sound device from "Speakers (SB Audigy)" to "Digital Audio Device (SB Audigy)".

The game then loaded fine.

I found this fix that worked perfectly for me from a post about two years back so thought I'd repost it in hopes that it will save others from the same headache I had.
