Why not just fence everything?
What's the point of ship combat when I can just run in every time, fence the captain, and get a 100% condition ship out of it? Fencing isn't that hard.

It depends on the difficulty. At the highest difficulty fencing is hard. Also the difficulty will depend on your crew size vs the enemy ship's crew size.

I would also argue that just running in and fencing, assuming even on the hardest difficulty you are always going to win, is boring.
Ship Combat on Pirates! is probably the best of this type of ship combat still in games. It's more tactical than people give it credit for and it's just genuinely very interesting. Sure, if you don't want to risk yourself just charge in. I play it how it really happened back then - either use my speed or size to advantage and weaken them and if they wont surrender, go in for the capture. Oh, there is one other thing. If you charge in and you're outnumbered and you don't manage to win the sword fight early on then you will lose because as soon as you drop to too low a number of crew you surrender, same for them. |

Too low a number being 1, Its easy at the start, if you keep a decently fast ship with the Triple Hammock Upgrade, but the higher the difficulty the harder it gets and just because you want to fight, doesn't mean that the enemy will want to do boarding action themselves, one of my worst games was when I rushed in for a quick boarding and just got blasted out of the water, or the time i kept at boarding ships and ended up with 4 ships but less that 30 crew, got attacked by a pirate hunter and finished.

It might be easy taking on the captains of merchant ships but just wait until you come up against a pirate hunter captain with a rapier. Also try upping the difficulty, you might find yourself actually running from some enemies then.
Not to mention that being in a prolonged sword fight can cost you a lot of crew, which can be serious if you're coasting the Spanish main with no chance of getting new crew anytime soon. Bombarding enemy ships until they drop their colours is a useful tactic |
