I've tried with the Start up repair, but it didn't work. It went through but didn't fix anything. Maybe the start up repair on the windows disc will fix it.

There is no way to repair your Windows installation after installing a new motherboard because there is nothing broken in the first place. Your Windows installation is tied to the chipset you used on your last motherboard. There is no way to change it.

Save yourself a lot of time and energy by either popping in your old motherboard again to back up the files you need, or use a live Linux CD/USB like Parted Magic to be able to access your hard drive, grab the files you want, put them on a USB drive or external hard drive, then reinstall Windows.

Even when trading to an identical motherboard chipset windows will fail product activation.

As others have said, always backup with a system image and reinstall.

Windows 7 has an awesome built-in backup and system image tool:

Ok, So I'm backing everything that I want saved on an external hard drive. Reformatting isn't going to make me need a new windows 7 key is it?

No, you may have to call the windows activation center (windows will tell you if you do) and clarify that you have used it on one PC.

It is an automated system.
