Don't buy it.

They never supported Guns of Icarus, they dropped the game soon after its release, nothing was done properly.

I got it... It's... I don't really know. I've got mixed views to say the least. I think AI crew members really ruin this game altogether in my opinion, or atleast the way they're used. It's just confusing with them in it and instead of filling up one ship then filling another you see one ship with one person and another with one, so instead of putting two players on the one ship you end up with Red Ship 1: 1player, Red ship 2: 1player, Blue Ship 1: 1 player, Blue Ship 2: 1 player with the rest of the slots being filled by AI. The AI just confuse you as they're nameless and repair what you're repairing or take up gunslots you want to take or are about to take.

I got into one match, had a few people in it but I had no idea what was going on. I doubt anyone else did... Next thing the ship takes random damage and we all die. The next match I joined I couldn't see anyone on my ship(I'm guessing it's just a bug). Apparently our ship was full and had no AI but I couldn't see anyone and it lagged so badly I kept getting warped around the place.

There was also something like 60 people playing one of the maps when I started but after 20minutes of trying to come to terms with all that was going on no one was playing it.

I think this game will suffer simply because people were trust into the game with no idea what the hell to do. Sure, it's a beta, but it's more of an Open Beta where people are supposed to be lured into playing it and spread the word about how great it is but as is it's frustrating to come to terms with how to play the game and what role you should fill and how to fill that role. The sandbox/practice mode should have been prompted for first time players and given the role you take up you should be given a small bit of text outlining what it is you're to do.

It might be a good game but if you don't know how to play it you're going to give up on it fast and I think a lot of people did just that.

Summed up i'd suggest those who did buy it give it another shot and try the practice match where it's a lot more calm and gives you room to learn the basics. You should know that as captain when you have your abilities in play(Highlighted and selected using the number keys) they will damage your engines and damage will be done to them fast. This is the same for gunners and engineers using items that buff performance at the expense of damaging the equipment. It's a sure way to destroy your ship fast.

tl;dr

If you bought it give it another try but remember the basics: Don't use abilities/skills(abilities chosen using 1, 2 and 3 keys) as they will destroy your ship in a second flat if the tooltip says they will cause damage.

It's improving daily. Pretty solid, imo, not seeing the bugs you mention regarding sudden destruction. Looking forward to launch )

The original game was alright, but what I really wanted was multiplayer.

I'm just wondering whether this'll live up to my expectations. Based on the above review... Probably not.

Match-making and Tutorial

Howard from Muse, one of the guys working on Guns of Icarus Online. Thanks a lot for the feedback! Sorry for not responding sooner. Yeah the 2 things, match-making and tutorial, are on the top of the list of things we are working on. We already put in a placeholder tutorial in game. It's not polished visually, but it will teach players the different controls. There are a lot of things we are still working on, and for a small indie team like us, this is really a beta with different problems that we need players to help us test and solve. Game's not done yet, and we still got work to do for sure.

Howard from Muse, one of the guys that's working on Guns of Icarus Online, if you want to check out the game right now, you can look for Guns of Icarus Online on facebook and message us, or email us at feedback@musegames.com. I'll get you a beta key. The game is not done yet for sure, and we're still fixing bugs and working on some needed features, but at least you can give the game a try. And if you need help or have feedback, let me know anytime. Thanks!

Thanks a lot! Right now it's all competitive multiplayer and pvp. We are planning co-op modes and single player challenges, but that'll take us more time to make them happen.

With the old Guns of Icarus, we did get a lot of feedback and fixed a lot of problems that players were having after release, but feature wise, we definitely fell short in implementation and support. That was our first real release, and we could have done a lot of things way better. No excuses, so I have to agree with you. With Guns of Icarus Online, it is pretty much a new game that we created from the ground up. We're trying to make happen a lot of the things that players of the old Guns of Icarus wish they had. Anyways, if you want to try the game, shoot me an email at feedback@musegames.com, and I'll get you a beta key to get into the game. Thanks a lot! Howard

Heh, thanks for the offer. I probably have work I should be doing first. Maybe in a few months... :P
