How to deal with the Holy Roman Empire?

So I'm playing as Denmark and I've lost control of some of those independant states south of my starting provinces to the Holy Roman Empire (one territory rebelled and was quickly snatched up, and another chunk was lost when they declared war and I had no choice but to surrender as 30,000 soldiers marched against my 10,000).

I know there must be so much more to this game than I'm aware of, so does anyone have any suggestions for me to deal with the HRE? I'm pretty rich, but my military is just way too small and I'd go broke if I was to hire enough mercs to go toe-to-toe with them.

These are just suggestions and by no means a guaranteed way to deal with the HRE.
Great places to start:
1) watch for a civil war as the HRE experiences those a lot.
2) Marry a big ally and call them into war (france works)
3) Pick on sweden/norway instead
4) Join the pagan's side of the war(not sure if you can)
5) find your province with the best defense mod and hope for the best.

Excommunicate the Kaiser. France and Hungary usually take advantage of that and take to arms against the HRE. Of course you need high piety to do so.

Another option would be to swear fealty to the the Kaiser, although in some cases you cannot. Once in the HRE, you can use the internal politics to your advantage by taking over small counties and kingdoms within the Empire. Once you take enough of their land, make friends with other vassals of the Kaiser and rebel.

I personally prefer my first option because it is a lot of work to do the other.

Where can I find this modifier? I know I'm building walls and all that good stuff, but is there an explicit number somewhere I can see?

To my knowledge, there isnt actually a listed mod anywhere.
