The point is, regardless of rarity, the Earbuds broke TF2's 1960's-era theme and started the trend of introducing items that do not fit in with said theme. The theme is dead, so stop nitpicking and just enjoy what gets added to the game.

Yes, because such fantastical devices were a big part of 1960's pop-culture, and were widely believed to be the sort of thing that would be available to people in the near future.
Seriously, go watch some James Bond movies from the 1960's. Although they were based in the present day (i.e. the 1960's) James Bond had access to technology that still doesn't exist to this day. And beyond that, go watch some 50's & 60's Sci-Fi movies, you wouldn't believe some of the crazy stuff they thought we'd have by today.

Also, did you ever notice that TF2 is, well...kinda silly? Almost as thought it doesn't take itself overly seriously and thus isn't meant to be 100% historically accurate?

I like how the description of the Boston Boom Bringer is a "Level ## Futuristic Sound Device". Obviously, to us, a cassette boom box is obsolete, but to somebody in 1968, it is futuristic.
