Steam overlay web browser freezes and doesn't work.

I've tried reinstalling Steam and everything, yet everytime I try to use the ingame web browser, the browser itself freezes, although I can close it and use the rest of the overlay, and when I try to open the browser again its just grey with about:blank or something in the URL bar. Nothing I type in works, please help?

Are you playing a game that has the overlay coded into it or another 3rd party game?

Maybe it's the google doodle that freezes?

Could be yeah, because the browser itself is still responsive, its just the Google page that doesn't work, but it refuses to let me go to any other webpage.

got the same problem since today.
And also, even if you quit the game, just open the task manager you'll find that gameoverlay.exe is taking lots of your CPU usage. you have to force it close yourself.

For years the browser in the overlay has worked well until the last couple of days or thereabouts.

The first time I noticed the browser acting strangely was whilst browsing Youtube and attempting to copy a link for someone; it would copy a Google ad image for some bizarre reason. Keyboard shortcuts refused to work, as did all copy options on the right click menu which resulted in the aforementioned Google ad image. The page address also read about:blank despite Youtube clearly being displayed. In the bottom status bar it would load a Youtube page, redirect to some Google thing (presumably something to do with tracking and/or ads) then get to about:blank.

Now I can't enter any text in the address bar at all, cannot navigate to any site aside from the starting Google page (which I cannot type in at all either) and a steam user's profile page accessed from the drop-down menu in a game or chat overlay. Incidentally the latter seems to be working perfectly.

The final straw that brought me here today was joining a game to find everything stuttering badly so checked processes in WTM to find 3 images of GameOverlayUI.exe *32, each using 25 CPU and 250k of memory a pop!

Anyone have any suggestions? I haven't tried it but as above it seems a reinstall of Steam won't fix the problem, is there any way to delete and reinstall the browser?

I'm using Windows 7 (64bit if the *32 above wasn't a clue :P), 2500k, 480GTX, 8GB RAM, etc. No virus, malware or spyware detected.

In a way I'm glad it's not just me.

Nice attempted ninja edit concerning the processes too, but it was too late.

*EDIT*
Just played around with it again, loaded the browser which is pretty much the same as described above (can type into the address bar now but tapping Enter does nothing) and discovered that if I close and reload the browser it remains a blank grey box with no page at all, address bar, transport controls, etc. Totally FUBAR.

i think its googles fault. its the heavy javascript doodle.

workaround, go to:
settings ->
in-game ->
and change "browser home page" to:
"bing.com" or "about:blank" or "google.com/firefox" or "google.com/search?q=google%20fail"

Same here when I use the browser the url is always a google ad or something and I can't even copy the link. It happened after the last client update. Hopefully they fix it soon.

I can confirm this, happens to me since yesterday/this morning.

Changing the homepage to about:blank fixed it, so I suppose it was Google.

Whenever I started the browser (with google.com), I got the Google window and couldn't do anything. It didn't exactly freeze, but I could not type anything and opening new tabs would result in them being gray without any window loading.

It also caused multiple instances of gameoverlayui.exe to pop up and put strain on my CPU.

But I also had many occasions (since yesterday), where the URL wasn't displayed correctly. Often it would just load the page, then the address bar said "about:blank" for some reason.

I do think the last client update messed something up. Hope it gets fixed soon, I love the ingame browser.

Off Topic:
Oh, and fix the Offline Mode, while you're at it, thanks. The other day I was on my netbook and I couldn't go into Offline Mode because no connections to Steam servers could be made (no really? When I don't have a net connection? Curious!). And it's been like this for a while, from what I hear.

Today I've tried for the first time to use the Overlay. Everything seems to work well apart from the integrated browser, which simply "hangs" or "freezes" upon startup. I scanned the LOG file that you mentioned, and found this in particular:

ven ago 10 18:56:02 2012 UTC - opening url: http://www.google.com
ven ago 10 18:56:02 2012 UTC - Errors in resource\layout\overlaywebbrowser.layout:
Unknown key 'scaling' set in style 'URLStatusImage' in file 'resource\layout\overlaywebbrowser.layout'

Can it have any relevance?
(ven ago = fri aug)

Unlike yours, my browser totally refuses to navigate. No URL will work whatsoever.
