How terrifying would it be...
If there was actually a monster patrolling the Wine Cellar, and that was your first enemy encounter? The Wine Cellar has such a terrifying atmosphere that I honestly think a lot of the people who quit playing would have stopped there, before they even got to the water part.
The Refinery too. Imagine if there was an enemy patrolling it. Again, such a terrifying atmosphere, it simply begs for an enemy encounter. I realize that the purpose of not having enemies actually be there is to make it all the more terrifying when they sow up in the Storage area, but it just seems to me like there should be monsters there. On a side note, I think a second encounter with the Kaernk in the Cistern would also be welcome (there's some splashes as it is now but there isn't actually one there). |

I agree there are some places where a monster would fit well. However it's when the surety that there definitely will be something in a certain area, ultimately leads to nothing (and vice versa with a feeling of relative safety suddenly replaced by an unexpected encounter).... that the game really shines. Monsters everywhere would be too predictable.
With that said, as a couple of people were saying in another thread - some random encounters on every play through would ultimately make the game much scarier and certainly boost the replay value. Last edited by MX83: 08-07-2012 at 07:39 AM. |

I guess the developers chose to let monsters patrol only in certain areas because they are supposed to be scary. If they added monsters to every part of the game, players would probably be like "oh, it's just a monster" since they got used to them.
The fact that there *could* be a monster in the wine cellar or the refinery was scary enough when I played it for the first time.

More like "How terrifying would it be if the monster spawns, and event scares were ALL random." Like a crap ton of possible triggers decided at the start of a level, with a minimum of so many depending on its size.

Yeah it would be great if some events were randomly generated. As you all know, half the terror in this game comes from the lack of monsters causing over anticipation of something horrible happening to you at any moment!

i'd rather have a rare random monster spawns during the game that can happen anywhere.. imho would solve all the problems.

For a new player it doesn't matter whether it's a real monster or not.
He's going to be scared as ♥♥♥♥ anyway and react as if there was a real monster. |

I always thought that monsters appeared based on your sanity + other factors + the static encounter areas

It had me cornered and wouldn't walk away, so I ran out of sanity hiding in the shadows.I heard roaring and piano playing in whatever the area with the key to the wine cellar is called, but I never actually saw anything. Anyway, now I need to figure out how to explore areas with monsters. |

(in response to first post) This is why I'm planning on making a custom story named Amnesia: The Darker Decent. to do things just like that
