Well I'll tell you what most likely would happen if you forgot to completely shut down Cheat Engine before playing a VAC protected game. VAC would more than likely detect it and you'll get banned. So my advice, don't bother with Cheat Engine.
I had a rapidfire CoD4 program and left it running when I played CSS. Good thing that in my case the program wasn't hooked into CSS or I'd be banned right now.

I've had Cheat Engine running while playing a VAC game, but I don't use it on the game, I just either forgot to close it when switching games or I just didn't want to close it. Sometimes I'll have 5-6 Windows Explorer windows open to the same folder because I'm to lazy to click on the icon and click the X.

If they were going to VAC ban people for Cheat Engine? Why not for uTorrent? ~ 29% of the people who use Steam use uTorrent.

If I want infinite grappling tethers in Just Cause 2 so I can tie a string of bad guys to a car and drive off with it that's my own damn business. Its a single player game and its my fun, not yours.

Its the difference between using the Konami Code for Contra and using an Aim Bot in Counterstrike.

Sometimes I use cheat engine for flash games. It's a highly versatile engine, I think as long as you don't mess with VAC secured stuff you're fine.

VAC is external to the games. It runs as part of Steam, not part of the game.

Cheat Engine is a memory editor. It edits the memory of programs.

Because VAC isn't part of the game, it can't tell what Cheat Engine edited or even if anything was changed at all.

-> It bans for the presence of Cheat Engine.

Oh.. oh.. oh...

VAC runs WITH the game, IN the game. You don't see a separate process for VAC when you run a game do you? No.

VAC is made to detect unsigned dll files, code injected into the exe, etc. etc.

Do does Cheat Engine do when you USE it? It injects code into the memory of the exe to change a certain value. Do this in ANY multiplayer game that uses any type of anti-cheat system could get you banned.

You know how aimbots or wall-hacks work? They inject code into the exe or the dlls.

All VAC code is inside of Steam.exe

I'm sorry, I know this is an old post, but I must laugh-- "or I'd be banned right now"... and you are. It' just kinda funny because it's ironic.

(Yes, I know forum account status and VAC status are completely different things, and that you got banned on the forums after you posted that.)

I agree, why risk getting your account banned and making it completely useless.
