I'm a Windows Phone developer, and I'm currently looking in to implementing the web API for Windows Phone. It should be able to feature most of the functionality requested here (except buying stuff, I'm not sure how to go about that yet), but I'm running in to the first line of defence: Loggin in.

Steam offers a OpenID login, but this means you have to go via the browser. Not a real problem as I can do this an catch the authentication token after loggin in. This makes sure you don't have to enter your steam login and password in the application, but on the steam website.

However this is where it goes down the drain as steam has SteamGuard, which does not work in the WP7.5 browser.

Steam also offers OAuth2 login, this however requires the user to enter the steam credentials in my app before authenticating on the steam server and lets me ask for a steamguard key. This would work, but as a user my self I would not be to happy entering this info in an application I did not know. I did have to register for an APIkey on steam though to get access to the extended API, but the API terms tell me this: You will abide by the Steam Web API documentation and, in particular, you will not intercept or store the end user's Steam password on log in. .

So the user will have to log on each time because I'm not allowed to store login info, so far so good but as the user has to enter his password in my app this is technically intercepting, even if I throw it away right away after the user logs in. You won't know this for sure do you? On the other hand most API features just require your SteamID (your 60 characters long identifier that steam uses, not your username), which I'm apparently free to store locally in the app.

I would like to know if anyone is interested in this would be (FREE!) app?

I'm going to build most of it anyway because I would like the functionality my self, but I'm not going to go through the trouble of making it through the store validation if nobody is going to use it.

I'm not looking at earning a cent on this or even cover development cost, I just want this app as bad as anyone here. If Steam won't build it, I sure as hell will try.

If you used the private APIs (the OAuth stuff), you could just store their access token and not their credentials. It doesn't violate the ToS explicitly, and I believe that's how Valve do it themselves.

I already have a semi-working WP7 project already, PM me if you're interested in it for reference or copypasta.

I fully support an official Steam app for Windows Phone. Most Windows Phone users that I know are avid gamers (not all, but the vast majority). It would be to Valve's benefit to allow as many people as possible to use their service so that those users are able to communicate with their friends and such - hence a sense of community and of being "connected" to people they game with. The more people feeling like they are part of the Steam community through their friends, the more loyalty they'll have to the service, and ultimately that will lead to more revenue and repeat customers, etc. Most of this is common sense, of course.

Needless to say, if they release a Steam for Windows Phone, I'll gladly use it and encourage others to do the same.
