"Forget silly-sounding Silicon Valley job titles like code jedi or chief listener."

Because this exist in the credit scroll on professional games. I can't go though one without seeing 'silly-sounding' job titles like that.

"“I get freaked out any time one person leaves,” says Mr. Newell, a bearded bear of a man with John Lennon-style glasses. “It seems like a bug in the system.”"

A 'bearded bear of a man' really sounds like how someone should describe someone successful and worthy of respect as Gabe Newell.

" Team Fortress, a Valve game that features an evil virtual corporation that hates its customers and sells them inferior products."

Mann Co.?

I figured Saxton Hale was just an idiot making stupid choices while everyone else tries to keep the company afloat.

Their only proof of what they said was :"“Mann Co. We sell products and get in fights,” reads the sign on the door in Valve’s lobby."

The rest of it has a feel of treating the reader like they don't have a clue what any of this is and hiding a lot of facts. There is also the strange attachment to EA that they have. When speaking about hardware, they go to EA twice on the matter and only to Microsoft when it comes to a direct questioning of W8 by Gabe.

"All the news that is fit to print (and we approve of)" Indeed.

Valve are good devs but haven't done much creatively in the past 4 years.
Steam has some customer support issues, other than that it's usually alright.

I like the bit where Newell moved the guys desk. That guy really didn't get the spirit of the company.

Just cross your fingers and hope they stay the same. Paradox Interactive used to be one of my favorite devs but now all they do is make DLC and tack on a game for it.

From the article you're commenting on:

Mr. Newell said that there was a better chance that Valve would “disintegrate,” its independent-minded workers scattering, than that it would ever be sold.

“It’s way more likely we would head in that direction than say, ‘Let’s find some giant company that wants to cash us out and wait two or three years to have our employment agreements terminate,’ ” he says.

"Valve started an online service, Steam. It has since become for games what iTunes is to music."

Been saying this for years. I don't think Valve would go public. I believe they don't need outside capital to invest in furure projects.

I hope they slim those goggles down to sunglasses size or they're on to a a loser. How many companies have tried to get people wearing goggles to game and how many have succeeded? Even the passive g;asses are worn for short times, like a movie, not for lengthy gaming, in my experience.

Anyone think they'll do well and why?

Yeah most everyone at EA is dumb, but it is good to see they have enough brain power to at least see how awesome valve is.

I read a rumor on one of my investing boards that Apple representatives met with Valve a few months back, and rumor was Apple might buy them. I very much hoped that wouldn't happen as I really like what Valve has built and was concerned that a more corporate culture would destroy it and milk it. I'm not anti-Apple, but their more closed business model is very different from what Valve is doing.

Valve says there was nothing to rumor, but it did worry me about what a buyout could do to tear down Valve.

Gabe must have deputies whom he trusts and who work on his ethos who would be able to take over once he goes.

EA sought to buy Valve for $1Billion. Newell: Company would "disintegrate"

http://m.ign.com/articles/2012/09/10...-acquire-valve

"Electronic Arts was apparently prepared to pay up to $1 billion in order to acquire Valve, according to a new report.

"Valve has been pursued over the years by Electronic Arts, which would very likely have valued Valve at well over $1 billion had the talks progressed that far," it explains.

Valve co-founder Gabe Newell long been convinced that the company would "disintegrate" if it was ever bought by another company."
