ATI 4850 was causing BSOD error
So here i am trying to figure out what is causing my monitor to turn off and also getting BSOD error every 10 minutes, even though i just formatted my PC 3 days ago. I saw few signs on the screen where wierd dots were appearing so then i told my self it must be the graphics card. I removed it and just connected my monitor directly to the onboard video and everything has been working perfectly now. So now what should i do with this ATI4850 card laying around? Is it bad?

Try putting it back in again. It may just be a driver issue.

Plug it back in and ensure that the fan/whatever cooling method you have on it is operational. Also, if you've ever overclocked it or ran catalyst "auto-tune" make sure you disable it. If you have another PCI-E atx cable coming from your power-supply try that. If all those don't alleviate the problem boot the machine into preferably a Linux Live CD or if you have to the bios and just leave it there. Inspect the screen every once and a while for weird patterns. If none of these work - you'll have a legitimate excuse to pay an absorbent amount of money for a replacement i.e. top of the line. |

Pixel artifacts are usually from overheating the gpu.
Clean out it's heatsink and fan with compressed air. You can go as far as taking off the fan shroud and reapplying thermal paste. And of course blow all the fuzz balls out of your case and it's fans. |

Since people are saying its cooling, and frankly I agree, try this before you RMA OP.
http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?...FeUWMgodXwgA8w It will work on other cards besides the 4850 to boot. Its a good investment even if you do have to rma. No its not an amazing cooler, but its better than stock gpu coolers for the most part. |
