Your assumption about his PSU was wrong (unsurprisingly as emachines is positioned as the dirt cheap brand), and the data from a more powerful system running furmark should put an end to the fear mongering.

As batabil's problem is solved, I'll leave you to your own advice.
what is your problem? its rated at 20 amps for 50 c so that is easily just 15 or 16 amps at 50 C when brand new, you know yourself to take off a couple amps from the cheap psu after using it for while. that is 13 to 14 amps available. SIMPLE MATH says about 156 -168 watts.

199 watts at the wall would be about 170 real watts. take off maybe 20 watts more for his cpu. furmark is not putting the cpu under hardly any load so its not using much more power than the i7. it is possible for a demanding game to use 150 watts peak with his system and 140 watts would be nothing in a game like Crysis 2. so yes he is fine but he does NOT have a lot of headroom.

and I made it clear that he may not have the psu that I was worried he may have. I normally deal with HP/Compaq and know exactly what they use on their entry level comps and its never changed. I knew the 300 watt psu in his particular Gateway could possibly be the same as they use in Emachines so we needed to make sure. Gateway had not always used the psu he has in the past. I went out of my way to find his exact model after getting some partial specs from him but though but I guess that does not matter?

and yeah how dare I try to err on the side of caution? you on the other hand tell him that he has plenty of room which flat out nonsense. you should always prepare for the possible worst case scenario with a psu especially a cheap oem unit with no protection.

EDIT: unsubscribed so knock yourself out and continue to act like a jerk to someone trying to give the best overall advice.

Got the video card. Radeon HD6670. So far it works GREAT. I got 90fps on max settings. All that worrying over nothing.
