Steam games don't detect Xbox 360 controller.

I recently got an Xbox 360 controller (Wired USB) for playing games like Tony Hawks Pro Skater HD on but none of the games I try are detecting the controller.

When I open the Game Controllers Icon in Control Panel of XP the game controller responds to every button press and calibrates fine and everything.

When I open any game that steam lists as 'Controller Enabled' That I have however I can't get any response from the Controller.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Generally, you have to activate the controller in the game options for each game. I don't have first hand experience but my stepson uses a controller and he has to do this on most games.

Did you install the driver? (Can be found on the CD inside the box)

Some games (2010 or earlier) as Silicon Vampires mentioned, you will need to change the control option into Xbox Controller

However, recent releases title has auto detecting controller capability, just make sure you turn on/plug in (in this case, you should plug in, turn on is for wireless users) the controller BEFORE you start the game.

I didn't get a CD with it.

It shows up under Game COntrollers in the Control Panel Icon.

My computer is compatible with it on the system requirements of the box.

Its corded with a USB and shows up when I plug it in.

I googled drivers and installed them.

Its plugged in since before I opened a game with Controller
Enabled and I have selected in the config of the game I am using a Gamepad and still no response for mthe controller

-_-

I tested Tony Hawks Pro Skater HD and Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Both Episodes (tested Episode 1) as well as a vast variety of console ports ranging from Prince of Persia Assassins Creed to worms Saint's Row etc.

I'm using a Black Wired Xbox 360 USB Controller 3rd Party which specified It was made for PC Gaming with a controller.

You should have the driver already installed if you're running Windows 7 but if not you can try to download this. Also check for windows updates (maybe a driver is in there). It sounds as if you're testing with controller enabled games, but don't assume that because it's a port that it will have controller support. Games that you would expect to have gamepad support do not such as Bioshock 2, Battlefield 2, most COD games, etc etc. I made up a list a while back which includes just about all of the major releases with gamepad support here. I would also like to see what controller you are using exactly. It's possible that it isn't a controller which uses Xinput (such as Logitech or PS3 style ones). Have a link to it? I always recommend official 360 controllers for PC gaming because they seem to the most compatible and the most durable. Good luck.

I've looked in google Image Search for the controller Image but I can't find it. Its basically the same looking as an Xbox 360 Controller thats Black except it doesnt have the guide button its Just got A clear blue button there and the Start and Select are like Eyebrows Slanting diagonally inwards to this button.

When I tried installing those Drivers on WIndows XP SP3 It said "Setup could not complete the installation because you are not running Microsoft WIndows XP SP1 or SP2"

Apart from that I'm not sure theres much else I can do to fix this problem besides using a keycline program like Xpadder or JoytoKey but thanks for the help anyways.

try finding the model # of the controller from either behind the controller or its box? Maybe post a picture of the controller.

I would recommend getting the Microsoft 360 controller for the PC as even 3rd party Xbox 360 controllers seem to have problems as most PC games that support a controller now are coded to work with the Microsoft one and that can lead to a lot of problems with 3rd part ones. I had the same problem gave in and threw down £20 on a wired 360 pad and has worked 100% fine no problems at all.

Ok I have seen many people not able to get the Xbox 360 controller to work on the PC, which is strange since its all microsoft. This is a work around this issue but involves getting a PS3 controller.

I for one have preference for the PS3 pad over the xbox pad (i got small hands and the PS3 pad just fells and fits better for me).

So here is what I do and use. Get a PS3 pad, google: motionjoy. Go to their website and download the software. Its a very simple driver software that allows you to connect the PS3 pad to the PC and use it as 1. A mouse 2. A controller 3. As an emulated xbox 360 controller 4. You can customize all the buttons to anything you want (like the start key, or any button on the keyboard).

Furthermore if you have a bluetooth on your PC you can connect via it and use it completely wireless. With just a press of the PS button you are connected and ready to go. You can also connect 2 or more PS3 controllers if needed. I have played Fifa with 4 of my mates all using PS3 pads on the PC.

Some games that I play with it are: Fifa, PES, GTA (all of them), IL2, emulated PS2 and PS1 games.

It's possible that he could have bought an Xbox 360 controller rathre than the Windows version wich comes with the drivers.
