Steam client bootstrapper has encountered a problem and needs to close?

Screenshot

I was playing fine in offline mode. I don't know why I did it (I regret ever so much doing it) I chose to go online yesterday and ****** STEAM DID ITS ****** UPDATE!! And then this! Every time I try to launch Steam or pretty much any steam game, all I get is this!

This forums have never EVER helped me solve any problem in the past. This time, it better give me a satisfactory answer!

Seriously I've never been more p.issed off at steam before. The game's right there installed but I can't play because of valve's stupid servers screwing up the stupid client!

Solved!

It seems I had to find the solution on my own!

It got fixed after I executed steamTmp.exe from Steam Installation folder, after which I had to log in to my account.

Hope this helps some unfortunate guy like me in the future.

Having the same problem and this method didn't work either, as well as the deleting the files and running it.

I dunno if i got the same problem, however steam seems to lock up while trying to connect to my account, the steam client bootstapper is the app that is running in task manager however it just sits there forever. I force close and try again, didnt work, i tried running that file u mentioned, dosent seem to work either. I happened to manage to get on yesterday after a looooooooooooong time but i dont know how i managed it, its doing it again today.

Actually the steam.exe is corrupted forever apparently.
I launch steam from steamTmp.exe.

Also I've kept Steam in offline ever since.

If anything comes up or if I find a definite solution to this, I'll post here.

Thanks for your feedback guys!

Here's what I did.
ATTENTION: Do this at your own risk! Although I took precautions like saving a copy of the main executable, I'm in no way responsible for anything that goes wrong while you're doing this.

(1) Went to the steam directory.
(2) Renamed steam.exe (the file that's not working) to _steam.exe
(Backed up steam.exe by renaming, just in case)
(3) Created a copy of steamTmp.exe and renamed it to steam.exe
(4) Now when I try to launch Steam from desktop/start menu, the existing steamTmp.exe disappears but steam client loads without fail.

It's probably safe to use steamTmp.exe and put steam offline before doing this lest another update attempt screws up this again. My guess is that on every update fail or something, a backup of the executable is made that is called steamTmp.exe. That is actually the former copy of the steam.exe, judging by the size difference (_steam.exe 1.52 MB / steam.exe formerly steamTmp.exe 1.29 MB)

Anybody confirming this will be appreciated.

Thanks for the try but I think it just downloaded a new TMP and it still says the bootstrapper failed. Can I save my steamapps folder and completely reinstall without losing everything?

Yes, you can and you won't have to download your games again...

Very worryingly I have the same problem as lots of others are having.

Whats very disturbing is that the main thread on this topic seems to have vanished - even my post on it is no longer in my post history...

Still cant get steam working - still have a ticket open 2 days now.

I'm getting this too. Just got back from holiday and looks like an update has broken Steam. Simply trying to launch Steam instantly gives the 'this program has stopped working' message.

Running SteamTmp.exe doesn't help. It looks like Steam is being updated (SteamTmp is 1318KB and Steam.exe becomes 1561KB).

Don't Steam test their updates before rolling them out?

Don't panic

Easy fix guys, at least for me. I had the same problem. I just followed the directions for moving steam to a new folder, except I didn't move it to a different folder. Done it several times for actually moving steam and never had a problem. Worked great this time too.

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...7418-YUBN-8129

Essentially, you just go into your steam folder and delete every file except steam.exe and the steamapps folder. Then start steam.exe and it will re-download itself automatically (was about 101MB) and then restart and you can login. No errors for me after that. Took only about 3 minutes.
