He can always switch to a different wrench and get his arm back.

Pyrovision shows us that... Well, he needs his gas mask filter changed, but that he is truly insane (possibly from fumes). Fire is rainbows, screaming is laughter, blood is party balloons, and that the world is bright and cheery.

Well, it depends on your point of view... Didnt valve flat out say at one point that who the pyro "truly" is is different for each person?
I see Pyrovision as a metaphor for the joy that the pyro takes in fire, not something literal. Thats just a personal viewpoint, of course. Doesnt make other viewpoints less true.

Radigan Conagher may have sawn off his hand to put on the Gunslinger, but who says the Engineer did, too? He could've lost it in a fight.

My theory is that the engineer is to some extent convinced of the supuriority of machines over people. This is why he was willing to saw off his arm and replace it with a robotic replacement. This also may explain why the the Engie hangs out with the Pyro in the Christmas comic. I dont believe in the "Pyro is a bot built by Engie" theory ive heard, but the Pyro looks very inhuman in the gas mask, meaning someone used to machines could be more comfortable around him/it/her/whaddever the pyro is.

just my weird take on it.
something got into his arm and it went BAD!.

so he lopt it off at the wrist!!

- Soldier: The last comic really did show us how crazy he is. "Soldier, are we on the moon right now?" -"Yes!"
- Heavy: I don't think he's as stupid as people think. He's just addicted about heavy guns and he reminds me of the weird kid that makes objects his friends. He may seem stupid because he has an accent and his English is somewhat broken.
- Demo: At least crazy enough to handle explosives while drunk
- Pyro: Do I even need to discuss this one?
- Scout: Kinda crazy too. I mean he enjoys smashing people's head in...
- Medic: Genius, but insane. Seeing his lack of ethics as shown in Meet The Medic
- Sniper: Perhaps the least insane. He's just doing a job. Then again, killing for a job does imply that at least something's wrong with you
- Engie: Crazy genius. Not in an "evil crazy genius in a mad castle" way, but in a way where he uses his intelligence to create ever so effective ways to kill people for money
- Spy: Similar to Sniper. Not truly insane, but still crazy enough to kill people for money and having no feelings towards his targets.

Plus, he drinks radioactive liquid. A lot.

THANK YA, YA BLOODY FOODSHOP OWNERS!

Why do you think he's wearing the glove with other wrenches?

Anyway, some of them aren't "insane", just have personality issues. As for throwing jarate, drinking radioactive drinks and such, remember the in-game world is different from ours. Those things can be fairly standard in the TF2 world
