Valve does not care, but that is not what he was getting at.

At least indie games have a sharp focus on gameplay
Indie games have a sharp focus on gameplay OR they have a sharp focus on both gameplay and story.

Hey your game sold millions, not only a handful play it a month after release. That must mean the game was good right? When large droves of players leave a game quickly, that means the game is good.

A good game retains players, a bad game pushes them away.

Indie games are relatively cheap to develop and can therefore take a lot more risks. That means the good ones are great and the bad ones are awful.

'AAA' games have to appeal to a mass-market to have any chance of recovering their enormous budgets, so they're becoming dumbed-down CGI movies with four hours of unskippable cut-scenes and half an hour of actual gameplay with a big arrow in the middle of the screen telling you what to do next and a few fake choices in the dialogue so you can pretend that something you do actually matters.

Yeah let's not pretend that indie games always have stellar gameplay.

Indie games are't all good, but they are willing to take greater risks, and thus cover a much wider spectrum of gameplay styles and storylines (as well as innovative storytelling methods). It's better than the annual Battlefield/Call of Duty stuff in the AAA market.
