tkaway69:
If your server is running fine, then the problem is most likely not in your server config but in your clan's webpage. I don't know wich script your clan is using in their webpage to show serverinfo or to connect to your server, but here is a thread wich might take you in a direction for making it work for Source: Server Query I don't have a serverlink on our webpage, so my knowledge is on that is very limited, but hopefully the link will take you in the right direction. thenuke: Does your mapcycle work when you're using the shortcut? Because using the shortcut will give you a console window as well... you can use commands like rcon status... The sv_maxrate determines the max amount of bandwidth your server uses for each client. So lots of clients and a max sv_maxrate will take a lot of bandwith and can cause lag to clients if you have a slow connection. So you need to find the balance between the number of clients, your bandwith and sv_maxrate. In my manual you can find Drek's formula that can help you in your search for your best configuration. As Hotrod says, Im not sure if sv_maxrate will affect ping, but it can affect the smoothness of playing, especially if you have a slow connection. The sv-minrate determines the minimum amount of bandwith a client gets. I don't know the details, but if you set this number to 4000 then people with a modem connection can still connect to your server, but for them it becomes for some reason unplayable. So the higher this number the more people with slow connections will not be able the play on your server. So this setting is not important for ping or latency, but it gives you the option to draw a line so people with a slow connection will not play on your server. Play with the settings, also with sv_maxupdaterate, and try to find your best configuration. Good luck with it! HotRod: Thx, Im learning too :P |

custom maps
Ok, so I have my server up and running, thank you ALL and Lady for your Great Tut and all your responses, your very helpful..
Now I would love to be able to add some custom maps that are out there. Anyone have any knowledge of this? and if so, what are some good mp maps that are good for around 8 to 10 people? , I am unsure how to add them, and get them to the people using them, I thought I saw a forum on here about it, but I can not find it. (maybe just tired). will contiune to look for it, but if someone has a a little knowledge that they wish to share . I am unsure also where to get any custom maps, I found one place but have not attempted to install them yet as there is no help in the readme files.Thank you all again for all of your help. Thanks. |

You're welcome gotmtdew, nice to know you got it running.
For your question; I don't run custom maps on our server (yet), so can't tell you wich custom maps are any good, but in this thread there is a link where you can download custom maps: Custom Maps download Mostly the custom maps are in zip files so you need to copy them to the right place. It depends on the custom map how many files you copy and where you copy them. If the custom map has custom sounds then you'll need to copy those files to your Sounds directory. But mosty there is a readme in the zipfile where to copy wich file. After copying the files you'll need to add the custom map name to your maplist.txt and mapcycle.txt. Advise: Make a new thread on this forum with the same question, because not many experienced people look in this thread and you'll probably have some more answers. |

Lady Racquel,
Thanks for your help. Turns out the people over at - http://www.serverspy.net/ Have a nice serverquery program. This will suit us fine untill we get Psychostats. http://koc.centralfragzone.com/index.html |

Ok thx for telling tkaway69, I was scouting a bit as well for our website for a nice serverquery program, so I'm surely gonna look into ServerSpy.

If you update your server using the batch file it helps to have the output written to a txt file for later reference, because the window closes so fast. Just add the following onto the end of your batch file:
> c:\cssource\cssupdate.log Putting a space between the -retry and the > in the batch file of course. Giving you a final version looking like: hldsupdatetool -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir c:\cssource -username xxxxx -password yyyyy -remember_password –retry > c:\cssource\cssupdate.log Of course you can change the name of the cssupdate.log to anything you want. Although only certain file extensions will open with notepad, like .txt and .log, to name a few. Last edited by CPeanutG : 01-04-2005 at 11:31 AM. |

Great guide. Had a server up and running in no time. I've been looking thru the posts as I am experiencing one problem: the server does not show up on the public server list in steam. I can add it via ip. I do have the correct ports open and set it up at a second location with a different firewall just eliminate that as being the problem, but it did not resolve the issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

re: Now, download the HLDS server files that are required to run the server. Depending on your connection this could take from a few minutes to a few hours. Again, from the command prompt, enter this command:
hldsupdatetool -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir c:\cssource -username xxxxx -password yyyyy -remember_password –retry This will download all the hlds server files needed to run a Standalone Source Dedicated Server. ________________________ my question: can I just extract the GCF files with GCFscape to my cssource directory rather than waiting longly for hldsupdatetool to download all of the files?? is fo which gcf's should I extract? source engine / s materials / s models / s sound / counterstrike client / cs shared / hl2 content / hl2 deathmatch / etc thanx in advance ![]() Last edited by killpuppy : 01-08-2005 at 02:26 PM. |

shigum: More people have this problem and some solved it and for some it is still a problem. I had the same problem with a Linksys router and asked for help in this post and someone gave me a solution, but also with a warning that it could give other problems. Try reading the whole post, because more solutions are suggested.
That post is all I can give you for now, you could try asking the same question again in the "Source DS (Windows)" forum, instead of this post, because most experienced people don't look in this post anymore. killpuppy: I'm sorry but my knowledge is limited. I've never worked with GCFscape, so I'm not able to help you out here. Like I said to shigum you could try asking the same question again in the "Source DS (Windows)" forum. |

Lady Racquel: thanx but I have some lovely information
mabey you could add this to your tutorial to save time on the installation process ![]() Rather than waiting longly for the hldsupdatetool to download the files needed for the dedicated server, you can extract the GCF resource files that are already installed on your computer with GCFscape (download @ http://countermap.counter-strike.net...cfscape125.exe) GCFscape extracts the GCF files located in your SteamApps directory. The original purpose of this tool was to be able to extract models for modding purposes, however the GCF files contain all files used for Steam, and its games as well as the SDK and dedicated servers ![]() Instructions: Extract the following to your C:\cssource directory: 1. source materials 2. source sounds 3. source models 4. source engine 5. counter-strike source client 6. counter-strike source shared 7. half0life 2 content 8. half-life 2 deathmatch afterwards run the hldsupdatetool to verify the files present and to download the remaining few items not included with the GCF files. Then continue following Lady Racquel's tutorial ![]() |

As it turns out, the two servers we are hosting are both behind Symantec 200R appliances. Even explicitly defining inbound ports doesn't work. I ran several port scans, and unfortunately, the only port that would ever be open is 27015, which does allow connections via ip, if you know what it is. So when I get back to work monday, I'll be putting another firewall in place and see how it goes from there.
