Linksys router bug?

I installed a clean CSS dedicated Server on my PC. Didn't change anything, except for making a shortcut to srcds.exe. This is the shortcut line I use:

E:\cssources\srcds.exe -console -game cstrike +ip 212.187.105.43 -port 27015 +maxplayers 20 +map de_dust

If I doubleclick on srcds.exe, the server is starting with the internal IP (192.168.1.20), but if I doubleclick on the shortcut I get this errormessage:

Couldn't allocate dedicated server UDP port

And here is a list of what I tried already:

- checked with netstat if there was another program using the same port > there isn't
- changed the portnumber several times and ofcourse portforwarded my router
- followed the manual on www.portforward.com exactly in case I was missing something
- used DMZ, still get the same error
- tried +port/-port & +ip/-ip in all combinations
- just in case my ip changed, checked it with www.whatsmyip.com
- tried DHCP and Static IP
- updated the firmware of my router
- reinstalled windows using a ghost image

My router is a BEFSR41 version 2 (non wireless).
Does anyone have more suggestions or is this a bug?

I have the same router and made the mistake of upgrading firmware. go to linksys and get this firmware version 1.45.7 and then try it again.

Thx for thinking with us FFReaper, but I downgraded the firmware, still no results. I hope you don't mind answering some questions...

Are you using WinXP?
Do you have a dedicated counterstrike server or are you starting it up through steam?

Thx in advance,
Lady Racquel

(If I have any answers, I'll let ye know A_S_G ; )

I would first try determining if port forwarding is working at all. You'll need someone on the outside to run porrtqry or nmap against your routers external IP address while the server is running and your are all set to go.

I attempted to, but apparently your host isn't up at the moment.

Try this...

You might want to disable "block wan request" and enable multicast and ipsec, then make sure that uPNP is off and set a static ip on the server, also make sure no other firewall is running on the server i.e.. XP's firewall, BlackICE, etc..

When you set the port forwarding on the linksys for the server, go ahead and set TCP and UDP, once you have done all of this go to your "local area connection" on the server and right click on it and then on repair.

If this still doesnt work drop me an email to mp@dafonemen.com and I will see if I can get a bit more info from you.

I have 2 CSS servers running on 2 different DSL circuits with 2 2 version 2 Linksys Routers, both work like a champ, oh yeah, I using version 1.46.2 firmware on the routers.

Thx for the replies!

But no success yet : (

Anybody else with other suggestions...?

If I leave the router out of the network, the server is starting, so the problem is defenitely the router.

Zeee: it looks like portforwarding is not working at all. Asked a friend to do a portquery and I forwarded port 27000-27050 (UDP & TCP) and UDP seems to listen, TCP is not reacting, but tried the same with port 27051 (not forwarded!) and he gives me the same reply; UDP is listening and TCP is not reacting.
And as I said in my first post I tried DMZ as well and that's not working either.

Metalplane: did exactly what you said, but still no success. I'll send you an email.

Again, Zeee and Metalplane, thx for thinking along!

it's possible your ISP made a change and is now running your through an internal proxy. I would call them and ask just to rule that out.

Well ok...

Lady R...

I've experienced this same problem as you with a NAT setup on my router, or with a DMZ host setup, regardless.

The error message makes sense to me, when interpreted literally it's as if the server instance cannot open a port on that interface. Naturally, if that IP belongs to your router, it'll be difficult for any software to fire up a service on a port of an interface it has no influence over.

What I've done, and it has remedied the error message (but I'm not yet sure of the implications), is to add the external IP address to the list of IPs associated with my network connection. Basically, in the Windows network settings for your LAN connection, configure the TCP/IP settings, hit advanced, and add that IP. Seems to stop the error message, but not sure if it will create other problems.

Let me know if that helps you any, I used a default mask of 255.0.0.0 which is about as promiscuous as it gets but it worked.

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

YEAH BABY! THAT DID IT!

Matthartle if you're coming to Holland remember me to give you a big kiss : )

THX EVERYONE for thinking with us!

Here is the answer to my problem and hopefully for some others with the same problem.
Maybe it's a very simple answer, but unlike some other people I'm not a network guru ; ) :

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections

Quote:
You may have several network connections in this window. I want you to right click on the one you use to connect to the internet. Then click properties.

If you are unsure of which one that is, right click it and then click disable. Open a new copy of your web browser? Did it open a webpage? If you can not, then you've found your internet connection. Close that browser window. Go ahead and right click the network connection again and then click enable. Once again open up a new web browser. You should see a webpage. Close the browser window. Right click on the network connection and click properties at the bottom
Quote from www.portforward.com
Click Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and then the Properties button. In the new window click the Advanced button. In the tab IP Settings you see the title IP addresses. Click for that title on the button Add. Fill in your external IP address (whatismyip) and this Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0.
When finished click Add > OK > OK and Close

Maybe this answer indeed creates other problems on the way, but we are one step closer!

Again THX FFReaper, zeee, Metalplane and matthartle for your help!

I just looked at your original thread
Quote:
+ip 212.187.105.43 -port 27015
I didn't realize you had the external IP address there, I assumeed it was the internal IP address, so yeah, that makes sense. Aliasing the external IP address in the TCP/IP stack, could potentially cause other issues.

Why not +ip your_internal_ip_address ?

I run my server this way prior to nat translation and have experienced no issues.

Like I said zeee I'm not a network guru ; )

But if I'm using my internal IP in the shortcut can people from outside still connect to my server?
