Good info there.

Personally I would recomend Windows 2000 Pro or Server over XP as it has a lower memory overhead than XP, which may be useful for some people.

I would also not worry too much about the QOS setting. I would imagine that most peoples dedicated servers are just that (dedicated) and would not be running any QOS aware apps anyway. Having said that, it does no harm to disable it.

Yeah, it does use less ram, but I just like xp due to the features and compability with things.

NEVER disable your firewall unless you have other firewalls installed.
Even if you have all patches installled, it's just a matter of time before another leak is discovered.

We have the Windows firewall disabled, but that's because we have a central CISCO hardware firewall.

well im guessing if your using a router, then the only ports you should have open are 27000-27015 TCP, 1200 UDP, and 27030-27039 TCP; so you shouldnt have to worry. If you have all other ports closed then you should be fine. I only reccommend disabling the firewall due to combability problems, in addition to conserving ram.

It's a great start-post, but it was written with your situation in mind.
Not everyone uses routers, some people have the Internet connected drectly to their network card.
Disabling their firewall would really mean a disaster.

I see your point, but I wrote this tutorial thinking that people will be using port 27015 and not 27016. A server will really lagg if you are playing the game and hosting it all on the same computer.

i have run servers for years, xp or 2000 pro are not that good. i have had much better sucess with 2000 server. i got server 2003 and its the best by far. all my friends with linux say 2003 runs just as good as a linux box.

xp in my experience doesnt handle the traffic as good as 2003.
