bip_head error when importing

Trying to preview a hat I modeled in Maya into TF2 in the Workshop menu. I'm getting an error that seems to be related to the character model's bone based on this error message I'm getting:

ERROR: unknown attachment link 'bip_head'
ERROR: Aborted Processing on 'workshop/player/items/pyro/item_preview/item_preview.mdl'
CTargetMDL::Compile Failed - c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\team fortress 2\tf\models\workshop\player\items\pyro\item_previe w\item_preview.mdl
WARNING: CTargetZIP::Compile - Target 1 Compile Failed

Tried googling, found nothing too helpful. Here are some details of what I'm doing:

Using Maya, not Blender which nearly every tutorial out there that isn't outdated is using. I can switch to Blender if necessary but I kinda like Maya if only for the familiarity.

I'm modeling the hat around the head models (TF_heads.zip) I got off the official website. Do these have bones in them that I need to attach the hat to, or do I need to find a full body model? Also where can I find it?

If it's something within Maya I need to fix, please be detailed on where to find the tools. I normally depend on a book I own on modeling, but an ex-coworker "borrowed" it indefinitely and she stopped replying to my messages asking for it back.

Thanks in advance for any help. With any luck I'll get this working in time to submit something for the Mayann Project. Hopes aren't high, but at least I'll know how to do this for future projects.
