Can't Install TF2 on Ubuntu?

Getting an error message from Steam "Corrupt Update Files" after the installation has finished.

Originally when they distributed the Penguins I installed Ubuntu just to get one, but it wouldn't let me install TF2 for whatever reason.

Recently I updated Ubuntu to 16.10 and thought of installing TF2 to compare performance vs. Windows 10, but it's still the same issue.

Other Steam games download and play fine, however none of them are source games if that matters.

Corrupt update files?
Have you tried deleting the temp & appmanifest files and then verifying integrity?

Yes, I've done the deleting and reinstalling everything procedure, even reinstalled Steam after the second try. This issue seems to be somewhat common, googling resulted in a lot of posts about CS:GO and DOTA having the corrupt update files issue on Linux.

Unfortunately nobody seems to know for sure why that is. I've read something about Steam on Linux calling to Windows related files, then some said it wouldn't work on NTFS because Steam. None of the "solutions" I looked up worked. Some reported that downloading games as a different user worked for them; there were several suggestions to change Ubuntu startup settings, allocate more RAM, all sorts of weird stuff that didn't fix the problem.

It turns out that Source games - and only Source games - cannot be installed on anything that isn't an ext3 or ext4 file system.

I'm not going to go through the procedure of buying new backup space only to back up my relatively unimportant Ubuntu setup and change to a file system that I otherwise don't require. RIP TF2 benchmarks.
